Get to know Nova Concrete

A colored patio done well holds its finish through Minnesota winters. A colored patio done cheap fades, flakes, and cracks by year three. Nova Concrete has been installing, removing, and replacing concrete patios across the Twin Cities metro for 12 years — and we back every pour with a 1-year warranty. Fully insured. Call (612) 462-2610 for a free estimate before your project gets more complicated than it needs to be.

The scope of a patio project drives cost more than almost anything else. A basic 12x12 plain slab and a 20x20 colored, stamped surface with integrated steps are completely different jobs. Size, site access, existing concrete removal, slope correction, base prep, finish type, and reinforcement all factor in. Market rates across the region typically range from $1,500 to $12,000 or more depending on those variables. Every job is different — contact Nova Concrete for an accurate estimate.

What We Look at Before We Pour

We pay close attention to the topography of your property — and that's not just marketing language. The slope, flatness, and drainage pattern of your yard directly affect how long a patio holds up. A slab installed on a site with poor drainage or uneven subgrade will heave, crack, and settle within a few seasons. We factor in the architecture of your home, the grade of your yard, and the load the slab will carry — a hot tub pad needs different prep than a dining area. That's how we save you time and money on corrections later. See how we approach concrete installation from the ground up.

Concrete Patio Options: Plain, Colored, Stamped, and Exposed Aggregate

Not every homeowner needs a decorative finish. Honestly, if you're pouring a utilitarian pad for equipment or a utility space, a broom-finished slab is the right call — don't let anyone sell you more than you need. But if the patio is visible from the house or yard, the finish matters. We install plain broom-finished slabs, stamped concrete with texture and pattern, colored patio surfaces with integral or broadcast pigment, and exposed aggregate finishes that hold traction year-round. Each option has different prep requirements and different long-term maintenance expectations — we'll walk you through the tradeoffs before you commit to anything.

FAQ

Our Patio Installation Process

Site Assessment and Grade Review +
Before any forms go in the ground, we assess slope, drainage, and subgrade conditions. A topography problem caught before the pour costs nothing to fix. Caught after? You're looking at removal and a full redo.
Existing Concrete Removal +
If your old patio needs to come out first, we handle the full removal and haul-off. We don't leave a demolition pile in your yard and call it done.
Base Prep and Compaction +
We grade and compact the subbase to spec — typically 4 to 6 inches of compacted gravel. This is the step most DIY pours get wrong, and it's the main reason slabs crack and settle prematurely.
Forming, Reinforcement, and the Pour +
Forms are set to finished grade. We use reinforcing mesh or rebar based on load requirements. The concrete mix, slump, and finishing sequence all follow the project plan we set at the start.
Finish and Cure +
Broom finish, stamped pattern, colored surface, or exposed aggregate — the finishing work happens after the pour sets to the right stage. Curing time and conditions matter. We don't rush it.

What we do

Quick Facts — Concrete Patio Costs and Specs

Typical slab thickness

4 inches for standard residential patios. 5 to 6 inches for hot tub pads, heavy furniture, or vehicle access areas.

How long concrete patios last

A properly installed concrete patio lasts 25 to 50 years. Poor base prep or inadequate drainage cuts that lifespan in half.

Concrete vs. pavers

Pavers cost more upfront and individual units can shift or settle. Concrete is lower maintenance over time but harder to repair if it cracks. Neither is always the right answer.

Concrete vs. deck

Decks typically cost more per square foot and require ongoing maintenance. Concrete costs less to install and maintain, though it doesn't flex with grade changes the way wood framing can.

Hot tub and swim spa pads

A filled hot tub can exceed 100 pounds per square foot. The slab needs proper thickness, reinforcement, and a level, compacted base. This isn't a job for an undersized pour.

1-year warranty

Every patio we install is backed by a 1-year warranty. Details at our warranty page.
