Get to know Nova Concrete

Stamped concrete is a decorative finish applied to wet concrete using rubber stamps that press a pattern directly into the surface before it sets. The result looks like stone, brick, slate, or wood but holds up far better under freeze-thaw cycles than pavers do. Nova Concrete has been doing this work across the Twin Cities metro for 12 years, and every job comes backed by a 1-year warranty and full insurance coverage. Call (612) 462-2610 for a free estimate.

Cost depends on the size of the slab, the pattern complexity, how many colors you're running, and site access. A basic single-color stamped concrete patio will run far less than a multi-zone driveway with custom borders and secondary accent colors. Market rates in the metro range from roughly $1,500 on the low end to $15,000 or more for large, complex installs. Every job is different — contact Nova Concrete for an accurate estimate.

What Stamped Concrete Actually Is

Stamping concrete is a process by which a rubber stamp is embedded into wet concrete, leaving an imprinted pattern on the surface. The stamps can replicate natural stone, cobblestone, brick, wood planks, and more. We use liquid integral color added to the mix before pouring so the color runs all the way through the slab. Base color can also be built up with a topical color hardener applied at the surface. A release agent goes on before stamping to prevent the rubber from sticking to the unfinished concrete. That release agent also deposits a secondary tone into the surface, which gives stamped work a natural, variegated look rather than a flat painted appearance. Once the slab has properly cured, we pressure wash it and apply a protective sealant that locks in the color and makes the surface stain-resistant.

Where We Install Stamped Concrete

We install stamped concrete on patios, driveways, pool decks, walkways, steps, and interior slabs. Residential and commercial work both. The finish holds up in Minnesota's climate when it's installed correctly and sealed properly. That's the honest answer most contractors skip over: the sealant schedule matters as much as the initial install. We don't hand you the slab and disappear. During our design stage, the customer has unlimited color, pattern, and texture options so the finished surface fits the property rather than looking like a catalog sample.

Our Step-by-Step Stamped Concrete Process

First, we evaluate the site. Subgrade condition, drainage, and existing concrete all affect how we approach the pour. If the old slab needs to come out first, we handle removal as part of the job scope. We then form and pour the slab, working integral color into the mix before the truck arrives on site. While the concrete is still workable, we broadcast color hardener if the design calls for a stronger surface tone, then apply the release agent and press the stamps in sequence. Timing here is critical. Too early and the pattern won't hold definition. Too late and the stamps won't press cleanly. After full cure, we pressure wash, let the surface dry completely, and apply a quality sealant. The sealant is what makes the color last through Minnesota winters.

Stamped Concrete vs. Pavers: What to Know Before You Decide

Pavers cost more upfront in most cases and require joint sand maintenance over time. Stamped concrete installs as a single continuous surface, which means no settling, no individual units shifting, and no weeds pushing through gaps. The honest tradeoff: if a stamped slab cracks, a repair will show. Pavers are easier to patch invisibly. For most residential patios and driveways in the Twin Cities, stamped concrete is the stronger long-term value. We won't push you toward stamped if your site conditions or budget make plain concrete installation the smarter call. We'll tell you straight.

FAQ

Common Questions About Stamped Concrete

Technical answers to what customers ask us most before committing to a project.

What is stamped concrete? +
Stamped concrete is poured concrete that gets a decorative pattern pressed into the surface while it's still wet using rubber stamps. Color is worked in through liquid integral pigment added to the mix and a topical color hardener applied at the surface. A release agent prevents the stamps from sticking and adds a secondary tone. The result is a textured, colored slab that mimics the look of stone, brick, or pavers without the individual unit installation.
How much does a 20x20 stamped concrete patio cost? +
A 20x20 slab is 400 square feet. At market rates in the Twin Cities, a single-pattern, two-color stamped patio at that size typically falls somewhere in the $3,000 to $8,000 range depending on site conditions, the complexity of the pattern, border treatments, and access. Multi-zone layouts or custom borders push the number higher. Every job is different — contact Nova Concrete for an accurate estimate.
Is stamped concrete more expensive than pavers? +
Generally, no. Stamped concrete installs at a lower per-square-foot cost than most paver systems. The install is faster and the surface is continuous, which eliminates joint sand, individual unit setting, and the labor that comes with both. Long-term maintenance costs are also lower for stamped concrete when it's sealed on a proper schedule. Pavers can be patched more invisibly if a section fails, but that's a relatively rare event on a well-built install.
Does stamped concrete hold up in Minnesota winters? +
It does when it's installed and sealed correctly. The freeze-thaw cycle is hard on any concrete surface, but the biggest risk to stamped work is sealant failure, not the concrete itself. We apply a quality protective sealant after cure and recommend resealing every two to three years depending on traffic and exposure. Avoid using rock salt on stamped surfaces. Sand is a better ice traction choice and won't attack the sealant or pigment.
What patterns and colors can I choose for stamped concrete? +
The pattern library is wide: ashlar slate, cobblestone, wood plank, herringbone brick, flagstone, and more. Color options run from natural gray tones through earth tones, tans, and deeper charcoals. Nova Concrete uses liquid integral color for the base, topical color hardener to build surface depth, and a release agent to add a secondary accent tone. During the design stage you're not locked into a catalog page. We'll work through the combination that fits the property.
How long does a stamped concrete installation take? +
The pour and stamp phase is typically one day for a standard residential patio or driveway. Cure time before we pressure wash and seal is generally 24 to 72 hours depending on temperature and humidity. Cold Minnesota weather slows the cure. We don't rush that step. Full sealant cure adds another day before the surface should take foot traffic or vehicle load. Total project time from form setup to finished sealed surface is usually three to five days.
